Legal issues,Libel Data and Human Rights

Legal issue- to do with the law
Ethical issues- To do with morals, religion etc.

Intellectual property rights-
if you produce a piece of work such as an image, script, graphic or article then it's your intellectual property. If someone wants to use it, they require your permission.

IP law is... trademarks, copyrights, design rights, patents

Trademarks are used by businesses to protect their brands. you can register a trademark in the uk, across Europe and around the world for a name, logo or both.Only need renewing every 10 years

Copyrights automatically exists in documents, photos, maps and websites. Important to record when and how they are created. It's free protection.Your copyright lasts unto 70 years after your lifetime. If you pay someone else to create something for you, they own it unless it is agreed that they have the copyright.

Design rights can be used if you create furniture, jewellery or clothes and people buy it because of how it looks. To register design rights it can either be free and automatic or a small fee to protect your work around the world.

Patents are used if you invent a new product. They can last for up to 20 years and may be a complicated and expensive process yet, a good investment.

Star Wars Copyright case

The Star Wars commission "on a handshake and word of mouth" also led to work on Superman, Alien and Flash Gordon.

Nevertheless, the High Court rejected the multi-billionaire director's claim and the focus switched to design rights, specifically whether the helmets sold were works of art or merely industrial props.

If Lucasfilm could convince the courts the 3D works were sculptures, they would be protected by copyright for the life of the author plus 70 years.

If not, the copyright protection would be reduced to 15 years from the date they were marketed, meaning it would have expired and Mr Ainsworth would be free to sell them.

Libel- you can face a lawsuit if the media product is produced containing information about some which is untrue or damaging to their reputation. This can be in written form, imagery use or radio broadcast

Data protection act- if you collect data about individuals during the creation of a media product then the DPA must be adhered to or you could face a law suit.

The UK law that adheres to 8 principles:
-Requires the data subjects to consent
-Should only be kept for the reason it was collected
-Should be accurate
-Should be up to date
-Should be kept for only as long as it is needed
-Should be available to the data subject
-Should be processed securely
-Should be processed within the UK

Copyright, designs and patents act 1988
If you have created a piece of music, recording ,image ,broadcast, film or written piece of work then you have control of how other people use it.

Slander-carries the same legal implications as libel and involves making a false statement in the spoken word.

Crowd funding

An introduction to budgeting video: it is a creative tool that helps you to create a plan to pull of your movie  to get the director what they want  you need to know the story (script) and all the details of it  knowing how much things cost, do your research  use phone calls to find out prices  talk whilst negotiating the price  you have to be flexible with your money and take away from other areas to help where its needed  don't forget about post-production  food is important not to forget  "you can pull of anything with anything" compromise and balance between departments  What do you think crowdfunding is? The act of asking random people to give you money to create your product. What is the film called? What was the Kickstarter project for? How long did they spend developing the concept? How many days do the most successful campaigns run for? What figure did they decide on? How did they promote the project? ...
