Reflect and perfect

1. Identify two costs that you may need to consider when developing a new phone app and explain how these costs impact on the project

1 mark per cost
2 marks per suitable explanation

One thing you would have to consider, budgeting for is a team of product designers so that your app is engaging and modern to your audience. This would be taken from the original budget for their wages. Another thing to consider budgeting for is an advertising team, this would include employing someone to help advertise the app on multiple platforms e.g. social media, the side of busses and television adverts.

You would have to consider budgeting for a creative team, this is so that your app can be made to be engaging and modern. This creative team would take from the original budget to pay for all the employees of the team. As well as this you would have to consider any resources the team uses to create the app and make it engaging to the audience.
Another thing to consider is the cost of equipment such as a camera to record snippets for the app and or to take photos to make the app more engaging. To keep the costs down you can rent a camera for a short period of time and with the correct time management it should not take too long to record everything needed for the app.You would also have to consider equipment for the camera such as a stand or tripod so that you don't damage the camera further and have to pay more out of your budget for it .

2. Identify one act of legislation that is applicable to the creation of a new national newspaper and explain what impact it has

1 mark per act of legislation
2 marks expiation of impact

Human Rights Act, allows for individuals to create their own product and be able to copyright, trademark and have design rights over it.This allows the individual to have full control over the use of their product.

Human Rights Act, allows for the freedom of expressionism and so it would allow the creation of a new national newspaper as it is an individual expressing what they feel is news that everyone should know about. This would allow the journalist to write without fear of abuse or persecution.

3.You have been offered a job as an apprentice for a company called Align Media. When they offered you the apprenticeship, you were required to sign a form giving the intellectual property rights of any work you produce to Align Media.Explain why you were required to sign this form

written in first person
clearly state the reason why

I am required to sign the intellectual property rights form because if the company want to use my work they no longer have to ask fro expressed permission.

I  would be required to sign the intellectual rights form as the company then will not be breached for copyright as i signed away the rights to their work for the company to make use of it.

4. Identify one type of revenue stream that you could consider to make a website profitable and explain why this might be an effective method.

1 mark for revenue stream
2 marks for explanation or justification

One type of revenue stream is crowdfunding, this makes the website more profitable as it allows for the budget to be widened equalling in a larger budget overall. This will make the website more profitable as a larger budget allows for a more intricate website.

In order to make a website profitable you can use adverts on the website as the company that advertise on the website, will pay you to be able to promote themselves and advertise on your website  whilst also making profit themselves.

5. Identify two ethical issues that you would need to consider before your team develops ideas for a documentary on refugees. Explain how these will impact on the project.

1 mark per ethical issue
3 marks for explanation of impact on project

One ethical issue you would have to consider, is having a true documentary as any untrue information could be slander. Due to this all facts should be checked before development of the script: if any information is untrue it is to be removed.

A second issue, is that many employees/ personnel may be affected personally by the refugees and ao you would have to consider if the language of others may upset them and may become discriminatory/racist towards anyone affected. Therefore, you would have to carry out background checks of all individuals beforehand to make sure nobody will become upset.

An ethical issue you would have to consider is having a full and true documentary. This is because any untrue information used can be slander.Due to this all information should be checked before development of the script. If any untrue information is found it is to be removed. The amount of time given can impact this as if the pre-production is done quickly then facts can be skimmed over and in the final product the company can be fined for things such as slander that they could have realised before production began.
A second issue is that you may have employees/ personnel affected by the refugees and so you would have to consider if the language of others may upset them and become discriminatory/ racist towards any affected. This would consist of doing background checks on all personnel and knowing the individuals to ensure no one could be make upset or offended. This again would take time away from production and should be done before everyone is hired and even before pre-production to ensure that no one is to be made upset from this .

6.Identify one regulatory body which could provide guidance with regard to creating a new advert for a children's charity.Explain your choice

1 mark for regulatory body
1 explanation

The ASA is the regulator for all advertising in the media industry. This is non-statutory and funded by the advertising industry. This regulator will make sure that the advert is appropriate for all ages the advert is centred around

ASA, as they are the regulator for all adverts and can check if the advert is appropriate for television and not too hard hitting or untrue.

Q
Answer
Mark
Guidance
1
One mark for each cost issue identified, two marks for each suitable explanation
Eg.
·       One cost may be the wage of the designer of the app, either in terms of a graphic designer, or someone who can code. They may be paid for the project as a whole or on an hourly rate. This might impact the project because if no one has those skills already they may need to pay a designer which will usually be expensive, which will eat in to the budget. Finding the right designer for the right cost can be difficult which might also impact on time.

·       One cost might be to copyright the name of the app so that other people do not use it once it has been launched. This would impact the project positively so that the name cannot be copied. This does take time, however, so it might delay the project if they needed to wait for this to happen.

·       One cost might be to pay for market research to be completed on the product before release or at the point of release to gain feedback from the target audience. A company could be paid, or a person could be asked to undertake this on an hourly rate. Impact on the project would be positive because it would be clear as to how the product is being received by the target audience, ensuring that any amendments and improvements can be made in time for a launch deadline. Paying an individual would potentially be cheaper, but paying a company is likely to be quicker.

Maximum three marks per cost identified
2
One mark for the act of legislation and two marks for an explanation of the impact.
Eg.
·       Human Rights Act 1998 – impact relates to the stories they are able to write – is a story in the public interest?

·       Data Protection Act 1998 – when reporting on stories, journalists must not contain so many details in the article that the person can be found.

3

Must be Acts of Legislation NOT ideas or concepts
3
Clear explanation of why the form must be signed that must include one of these ideas:

·       Align Media may wish me to sign the form to waive my rights to the work and products I create while working for them.

·       If I sign the document, any creative ideas I have will be the property of Align Media rather than me.

·       I can’t give my ideas to anyone else while working for the company as they don’t belong to me if I have signed the form.

·       The ideas and products do not belong to me, so I cannot share them as my own during or after the time that I work for Align Media.

·       Align Media are protecting themselves so that other companies cannot steal my ideas

3

Response must be from the perspective of the student – why the student needs to sign the form.
4
One mark for the revenue stream, two marks for explanation/justification of effectiveness.

Revenue streams:
·       Banner ads of companies approached personally
·       Editorial name drops/product placement
·       Reviews
·       Adsense adverts in side bars
·       Subscription
·       Sales of merchandise

Justification:
·       Banner ads approached personally – align with products that are appropriate/relevant and ones that the student believes in so would find it easy to promote. Revenue from advertisers
·       Name drops and product placement in editorial – easy and cheap to do, hyperlink out to the products, recommend relevant products, revenue from companies
·       Reviews – will potentially be paid for writing the review or get a percentage of sales, also freebies from the companies that could be used for competitions on the website. Revenue from companies
·       Adsense adverts – using a programme like this is easy, free and partially relevant ads are included.  Does not require any set up except sign up. Percentage of product sales.
·       Subscription – asking people to subscribe for a fee would ensure that there is a constant monthly revenue
·       Sale of merchandise – dependent on what the website is for, merchandise could be created to be sold on the website or via a link from the website. This also provides advertising as the products could be branded with the website name.

3

Must not confuse income (sponsorship, grants, backers) with revenue (money made by a business)
5
One mark for each ethical issue, three marks for explanation of impact on project:
Ethical issues:
·       Identifying/dentity of refugees – some of them will be in danger and will be put in further danger by being seen on a documentary
·       Bias/fair treatment/misrepresentation – how can we ensure fair representation of the refugees and the whole system
·       Language barriers – Accuracy and understanding
·       Children – should children be shown in the documentary, without parents consent? Some parents will not be there to give consent
·       Refugees from where? – some countries may be too dangerous to report on/go to
·       Exploitation – what do the refugees get from this? Best not to pay, but these people are in real need. Is there anything else that can be done for them other than raise awareness?
·       Not getting too involved – will it be too difficult to tell the story without getting involved emotionally, financially. How will it affect the documentary makers themselves?

Impact on project:
·       Financial
·       Time
·       Emotional impact on crew
·       Legal stance
·       Buy in an interpreter(s)
·       Insurance – dangerous areas

8

Maximum four marks per
ethical issue.
6
One mark for the regulatory body, one mark for the explanation.

·       ASA – advertising standards authority. This organisation can give advice on what would be appropriate to show, and case studies of previous charity ads that have and haven’t been appropriate

·       BBFC – if the advert is to be shown on TV or in cinemas as a short film type advert it would be useful to see what can be included for a U and PG advert

·       OFCOM – If the advert is for the TV it would be worth contacting OFCOM to gain information about the watershed and what can be shown

2
One mark will only be given if the name of the regulatory body is properly written rather than an acronym.

The other mark will only be given for BBFC or OFCOM if it is made clear that the advert might appear in the cinema or on TV.
